Rahane leads from the front and impresses Ricky Ponting

The stand in skipper Ajinkya Rahane received heaps of praises from former captain of Australia, Ricky Ponting for his effort of leading his regrouped team against Australia in the second test held in Melbourne. Ricky Ponting points out that he was noto only quite brilliant with the field set up, but also lead from the front by playing a captain’s knock on Sunday with 104 unbeaten so far. It is because of his strong defensive batting that lead India to an 82 run lead of Australia’s 195.

Rahane unbeaen knock of 104 kept India to 277/5 finishing their day 2 of the Boxing day test match in a high. Ponting gave a furthy explanation about Rahane where he would have taken an some extra effort to pick the team up from a humiliating defeat in Adelaide. In the absence of Kohli who made his return home duentl paternity leave,b Rahane stood firm and defiant and also be at the driving seat in the match.

Ponting told the cricket.com.au that he has done a wonderful job to pick uo the pieces from Adelaide along with his team. He was able to lead his side brilliantly and he is also playing the captain’s knock that has allured more eyes on him. He was determined to play the captainy knock, although he has nothing to prove, but yet ensured that he fulfilled the promises the selectors, coach, team mates and selectors. All he is trying to do is in the absence of Kohli, he is wanting to is give his best and bring back the team back into the game.

Ponting put some emphasis on the Kohli and Rahane ‘s leadership comparison skills. India win 14 test series out of 20 including the famous 2-1 series won two years ago. Rahane on the other hand has had a complete 100 percent win ratio as the Test captain of India before the MCG test.

Although Virat has some an averge test record of above 60 captain, there are some noises that he is better of wen not leading the side. If this is to ever happen, then its kind of not usual according to Ponting. With regards to Rahane, Ponting feels that the batsmen has ticked off all the boxes.

Ponting added Virat would be the captain of India as long as he wants to be, and if he thinks leaving captaincy can make him a better player, then that would scare World Cricket.

With the words put by Ponting, he also emphasized that he is not doubting the captaincy skills of Kohli, but as far picking up the pieces from the previous test match is concerned, it would take something special to do that and Rahane has done it immaculately. He also thinks that Kohli would not be pressurized from anywhere else, but just have patience and see.

Rahane ‘s 200 ball century comprised of 12 boundaries, but led it so charmingly. He has had some luck on his journey on more than one occasion, first when he edged the ball on 57 between the wicketkeeper and the second slip Steve Smith, who also missed his catch on 73 and finally towards the end of Day 2 by Travis Head. Ponting found a lot of assurance in Rahane’s batting and was quite impressed.

He also added that he played an innings similar to that of Cheteshwar Pujara, wherein innings there are no thrills, but a few boundaries hit is backed by his defense and trying to hurt the Australian bowlers.

He thinks Australians have not made Rahane cover drive enough. He feels the Aussie bowlers have been quite short and plugged that over the region. According to him, there should have been another slip in place especially for the catch miss where the ball went between Smith and Paine, and keep the covers open
